Visiting and Postal address

My name is Herbert ter Maat and I work as a researcher on investigating feedbacks between the land surface and the atmosphere using a spectra of models. In past years I have been working on several modelling projects in the Sahel (Africa), Amazonia (Brazil), India (Haryana) and Europe. More recent studies have a strong focus on (1) the exchange of CO2 between land surface and atmosphere and (2) the implication of adaptation measures in the Rhine river basin using a hydrology-atmosphere model. These studies will also be a part of my PhD-thesis which I hope to finish soon (watch this space!).

In my spare time you can find me outdoors (cycling, walking), working out (fitness), or enjoying a good movie.

Research Interest

  • meteorology
  • land-atmosphere interactions
  • regional atmospheric modelling (eulerian/lagrangian)
  • effect of land use (changes) on regional meteorology
  • air quality

Current Research

  • Simulation of carbon exchange using a regional model:
    • The Netherlands (Climate changes spatial planning ME2)
    • Southwest France (EU CarboEurope-IP)
  • The relative importance of topography and land use on the Veluwe rainfall maximum in The Netherlands (Climate changes spatial planning ACER)
  • Coupled hydrology-atmosphere model: basin scale (Rhine river basin)
  • Source sink discrimination within the footprint of an observational tower
