After finishing my MSc in geographical hydrology at the VU University in Amsterdam, I have been working as a geohydrologist in urban water management at a consultancy firm. After six years I longed for more in-depth research and started as a PhD researcher in the Earth System Science and Climate Change group, studying greenhouse gas emissions.

Research interests

• Greenhouse gas emissions
• Biogeochemical modeling
• N and C dynamics in peatlands

 PhD-research

The objective of my research is to better understand and simulate the temporal variability in the emission of the greenhouse gas nitrous oxide (N2O). In Dutch peatlands the soil N dynamics have a close relation with the soil water dynamics and organic matter decomposition. The SWAP-ANIMO model combination is used to study these interactions in detail in the soil profile. Currently I am looking at the effect of aggregates on residence time of N2O in the soil and its consequent effect on reduction and emission.

In the last part of my PhD-research, I will apply the model to study the effects of climate change or land use change scenarios on the emissions. This PhD research is part of the ME1-project of BSIK Climate changes Spatial Planning.
